Uncomfortable shaking and hitting noises in the drive shaft area; A need for expert opinions

Hello everyone,

I'm new here and it's a pleasure to be a member with all you 190E enthusiasts.
_________________________________________________________________________________

I have a manual 1984 190E 2.4L (Petrol), last clutch replacement was 2 years ago (this part will come later in my topic).

And 3 months ago while I was on a highway doing 60mph, the drive shaft snapped from the gear box end (The Flex Joint gave up), that happened once I shifted 3rd gear and the car actually went airborne after the drive shaft hit a pothole in the ground (Weird timing) and jumped 3 meters up in the air and 15 meters forward (That happened to me before with the rear end of the drive shaft). Thankfully the car didn't hit anything, just bounced to the other lane.

I got it fixed, changing both Flex Joints (High quality) and the Center Support (Also high quality) and the gear changing columns,

but before all that (Right after I replaced the clutch),

I've been experiencing violent hitting and battering noises when I (Slowly) start letting go of the clutch pedal (And the car slowly starts moving, happens in 2nd and reverse gears too),
the hitting stops once I fully let go of the clutch pedal and the car runs fine, the hitting doesn't come if (While I'm in 1st gear and not moving) I rev the engine a bit hard and let go of the clutch pedal a bit faster, but that generates lots of wheel spin, the faster I let go of the clutch pedal with high revs, the softer the hitting becomes.

Now, my question is: What's causing that hitting and battering in the drive shaft area? And will it cause the Flex Joints to fail at a faster rate?

And could the hitting be a cause of poor clutch (and the rest of its kit) fitting?

Also, I brought up the highway accident so I establish the fact that the hitting was happening before the drive shaft fail.

Oh! Before I forget, the shop where I replaced the clutch closed 6 months ago, so no use of taking the car back to them :(

Please forgive my poor grammar and essay writing, after all, I'm Arabian from Yemen :)

And Thank you in advance.

Well shehabo you are lucky to be alive to tell this story my friend, I think the clutch driven plate has broken, or the sprung fingers on the cover plate have sheared off but your symptoms all point toward a faulty clutch unit. I would also check all the gearbox mounting bolts are tight to the engine. Best of luck mate, mick.

I would recommend that you check g/box mounts and propshaft bearings first and also diff mounts and bushes (diff mounts can be checked by putting handbrake on and turning/rocking rear wheel while looking underneath )

My first thought was to inspect the two flex discs and the universal joint on the drive shaft.
But all good advice here; If you look, I'm sure the problem will reveal itself.

The prop shaft is balanced at the factory and is in two parts.

It is essential that the two parts of the prop shaft are kept in the same postion. If they are pulled apart they should be marked before dismantling and refitted the same way. Otherwise the prop shaft will no longer be balanced and you could have all sorts of resonance problems.. check out what Ken says https://mercedessource.com/problems/driveline-and-rear-end/avoiding-201-and-124-chassis-flex-disk-trouble
