I didn't want to do this but it seams I need to. I posted that I had solved problems with my 1.8 manual 190e (No ABS) and now it appears to have bitten me in the ass right before my MOT... When I start the car it takes minutes to get started and is rough as hell to keep running for the next few minutes, once past this it burbles at 500rpm cold and 1000rpm idle once warm but sometimes hits about 1200rpm/1500rpm and apparently that isn't acceptable for my garage (And me TBH) So far I have:- Checked and re-soldered OVP (Working) Cleaned and checked the ICV which cannot be adjusted (Working) Cleaned and tested the cold start valve (Working) Checked and re-soldered all other relay boxes (All working) Checked and repaired all hoses for air, oil breather and vacuum (All working) Flushed my coolant system and heater core (You would not believe what I found in there) Changed and gapped plugs (Fine) although I haven't changed leads but they are not long since new Plugged an air leak on the intake manifold Found an oil leak and have ordered 3 new gaskets which will solve that So you can see I fixed a lot of stuff under the hood but I still have problems starting. Any advice or quick jobs are welcome (I'm a walking oil slick most of the time these days). I'm not shy to sticking my head/hands in the engine bay and I have a vast knowledge of electronics so fire away and I will respond with test results and/or diagnoses. As a side note I do have a meter but not with a dwell setting, that said I do know how to convert reading to duty cycle. Oh and what did I find in the coolant system? Egg ... Yes really, water, rust and egg. |

Have you tested the lambda sensor? |

Nope. First thing on the list for tomorrow. anything else? I need to keep myself busy out there because it is boring in here just looking at 190e parts. |

I would be tempted to do a compression test. Need to rule out beginnings of head gasket failure(particularly since there is egg white in the coolant). |

I had a similar problem, I stripped out and cleaned the throttle body and de scaled the flap edges, re fitted it with a home made gasket as its a face fit.... And that fixed it |

It had popped in my head I would need to do a compression test at some point and thats on the list now. Just had word that the egg in there is from when my father owned the car and I quote "Found a rad leak, bunged an egg in it" ...

I think thats the next thing on there but will take a while. I've taken jetronics apart before and I can honestly say it was intuitive but not fun in the slightest. What did you use for your gasket? |

Thanks for the joblist guys, I shall be continuing when she returns from MOT. The garage are performing the compression test and lambda test for me, they will also replace the lambda sensor if it's knackered. As I was going over what work I have done on the car he said that he'd seen 2 other 190e about the area and also had one in for MOT not too long ago (One black one silver) ... Anyone on here? Local area of verwood and ringwood. |

All in all the whole job took about two hours made the gasket out of the side of a cornflake box tapped the bolt holes out with the correct size socket, I only fitted the gasket as I don't trust anything that's face fit sucking air In etc I guess it's just the old style mechanic coming out in me lol |

Have you tested the coolant sensor diagonally across the 4 pins ( should be around 2.5k ohm cold 330 ohm when hot) and checked that you are getting the same readings (hot and cold) at the KE plug pin 21 ? Just in case you have a break in the wiring from the sensor to the plug on the ECU. From what you have said maybe the ECU cannot read engine coolant temperature. Added to the list ![]() So far the garage has replaced my inner drag link, a ball joint and welded a small section around a rear suspension component mount. Doing great for the age. I did manage to get the idle to stay at 1000 by refitting the air and vacuum hoses but ideally I'd like the idle to be about 850/900rpm. The mechanics are happier with the idle for the moment and has passed emissions which is a massive load off my mind. |

So I take it the car passed its mot then.... That gives you a bi more time to sort out the idle |

Yeah she passed just fine, I'm still going to get on with the list of things to do and test as quickly as possible so eventually the car is fully working. Maybe one day I'll give her a new paintwork ![]() |

Ok Update time, Compression test is tomorrow, rear brakes wearing thin, both outer handbrake cables are broken, front anti roll bar bushes need replacing. As for the tests I've done:- Lambda Sensor tested fine but the readings looked a little off to me so I cleaned it anyways Temp Sensor reading are fine, ECU temp signals are not, they fluctuate far too quickly and I will replace the wire Throttle body will be cleaned either this afternoon or tomorrow morning depending on weather (Looking like it'll be tomorrow.) Verdict, Idle is still no lower and has decided to sit at 1200 after warmed up. ![]() I'm thinking its a combo of temp sensor singal wire and throttle body. |

Silly question as you have probably already checked, but, have you checked the throttle cable has some slack in it so that the fuel cut off microswitch is closing properly? This switch tells the ecu that the car is in idle and allows it to control the idle revs to about 800RPM. The microswitch is on the linkage assembly at the engine end of the throttle cable! Very common fault! |

When I got the car it was a problem, it was idling at about 2000rpm at lights intermittently and was the first thing I fixed Good call though as my father chalked it up to the ECU...
