you can get at the tank filter from underneath, will need a 4 post ramp though, or a pit, take the fuel pipes off ,pull the rubber boot thing off, and a big sod off spanner to get the filter out

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

This link is for a w124 but it is very similar, I did my 2.0 this way on ramps, it will give you a good idea what to expect.

On my brothers 2.5d I took the tank out, I am not sure which method I would recommend. Tank out is more work but lower risk, from underneath there is always a risk that you just cant get it off and you may need to take the tank out anyway, like I did. Taking the tank out takes longer but really isn't very hard.

You can easily clear and soak the old strainer but on my 190d I figured to keep it on the road the cost was worth it. I think it was about £8, although this may well have gone up by now.

The 'tank out' 2.5d took me about 3 hours, mainly because I tried tank in first and gave up. The 'tank in' 2.0d was probably about 2 hours max.

This is with basic tools on a drive with ramps.

The 'tank out' gives you the option to swirls some fuel around and wash out any sludge or water.

I removed the tank when I did my mates 2.5 and I'm glad I did. It allowed me to flush it out properly with petrol. The nasty sludge that came out on the first flush was shocking.

Not sure tbh. Looks about 41mm. Kent's custom socket but he doesn't give the size. https://mercedessource.com/problems/fuel-delivery/diesel-engine-fuel-filters

Woz - it won't be on that tight, well, mine wasn't. So an adjustable spanner/pliers will do the job.

On the 2.5 mine was very tight, on the 2.0 I think I used a large pipe wrench. What I mean is .... I dont know the size.

It is bound to be mentioned in a thread somewhere.

It shouldn't be done up tight as there is a thick rubber seal but as it is fuel people tend to overdo it.

You can save time by turning the car on to its roof. This way you don't need a pit or ramp with the added bonus you don't need to drain the tank first.
