Repairing 5 speed manual transmission

I have some trouble with my 5 speed manual transmission (717.432), 2nd gear grinds when you down shift from 3th with out double clutching and some times it just jumps to neutral from second when driving. 3th gear jumps rarely too. Anyone know where I can get parts for the gearbox? I'll propably change all the syncro gears, bearings and gaskets. Are the parts expensive?

Also I was wondering can I fit some other gearbox to my car while I work on the 5 speed. I have 2.6 E (M103) with dual mass flywheel. I have read alot of repair info on the 5 speed on different forums and it seems quite straight forward dyi job if I can get the parts for the car. Is there some other parts that would be wise to change while the trans is on the table?

I'm looking at freshening my gearbox as well; I'll let you know how well the dealer does finding parts.

It must be cheaper and easier just to throw in a second hand box

It'd be a whole lot cheaper and less hassle to replace the box with a second hand unit. I'd only rebuild a box if I planned to own the car for a long long time

Yes certainly less work to get a S/H one and the car won't be off the road for ages.

You could always rebuild the old one once it's out if it takes your fancy.

I tried to find a 5 speed box but they seem to be quite rare around here. I found couple of 4 speed boxes (200 - 300 euros) but is there a difference in the outer dimensions, do you need a longer prop shaft for the 4 speed? will it mess up the speedometer because of the 5 speed diff? Can I even fit a 4 speed with dual mass flywheel? Also there is a risk of buying a used trans without being able to test it. I could be even worse than my 5 speed is.

Full gasket kit, 5 syncros + 5 springs for the syncros, all the tiny spirings inside the tranny, few different size washers (just to be safe), allmost all the needle bearings inside the tranny (10/13), all the main bearings, the nut for the flange to main shaft 440 euros inc tax and delivery.

Mates, that's a good point.
I do plan to keep the car another 25 years.
