Eagle, airtight - legends, thank you!!

I'll be on the blower to partsservice in the morning.

Airtight, I bought a genuine viscous coupling from MB, came in just over £100. It's made by Behr if it helps you track down an OE part.

Thanks, metrics.

That's the price I got from MB, too. Did some research and figured out the OE part was Behr, then found one at partsservice for £40. Haven't bought it yet so it's nice to have it confirmed that Behr is the right one to go for. Cheers!

Found a good price on the Nissens rad from a very unlikely supplier!

In case it helps others:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nissens-62582A-Radiator-engine-cooling/dp/B001FDUHK4

For reference MB want £370, my local motor factor wanted £200 for the Nissens, Amazon £113.

Another day, another saga :(

MB supplied water pump incorrect. Other version of the pump also needs a special order from Germany, another 5 working day wait. Garage not impressed with MB understandably as car is stripped.

To add to matters the ally rigid pipe that runs under the distributor is seized solid in the old pump. Need a new part. Anyone know the part number and where I can source a good quality part? Otherwise it's more wallet opening with my local MB parts depth.

Is there an online MB parts database with exploded diagrams, part numbers etc?

If you are planning to change the pump then its worth sourcing the metal pipe that connects into it. Mine was completely seized in and they arent that robust so will easily break if force is applied. MB want silly money (80quid ) but I did find one for 22 quid from a local motor shop.

cheers
paul

Hi Paul

This is the very same metal pipe that's shot on my car - totally seized in the water pump. Where / which motor factor did you manage to source your aftermarket part from please?

Thanks in advance!

I would think red means it's OAT based which is not recommended for our cars. The Mercedes stuff is what I use. This is green/blue colour. I think you should use a Glycol based one.

Hope that helps.

Not sure you can just go by colour for coolant - does it vary by manufacturer? But the Merc stuff is definitely blue :)

As said earlier by eagle3 I think you can just pick from the list of approved fluids. Spec 325.0 (although my manual says 325.1).

Try this link: Merc Bevo

Having said that I just got the Merc stuff from the dealer. Not that much more.

So, work all completed, not cheap (just over £1k all in) but cooling system is now is perfect shape.

For the record and to help others embarking on this work:

* Buy the best water pump you can, a lot of aftermarket parts are not good quality. My MB specialist insists on genuine, so I bought genuine. However I am sure a Febi Bilstein or Hella Behr part would be high enough quality.
* Be advised that there are 2 different types of water pump on the 2.6. My MB dealer ordered the wrong part despite having the chassis number. The pumps vary by having two metal pipe outlets versus one. My '93 non AC car needed the version with one outlet.
* The metal pipe was seized solid in the pump. New one from MB is £65, bought a Febi version (02010) from eBay, £21.
* Radiator - £370 from MB. I bought a Nissens part (62582A for a 2.6) - excellent quality and widely available from many motor factors for circa £200. However I bought mine from amazon (not marketplace either!) for £113 posted - bargain!
* Viscous coupling - I bought a MB part (it is made by Behr).
* New aux belt - MB part is same price as ECP.

Car idles noticeably quieter - old pump and belt were v noisy at idle. Engine temp quickly raises and settles at a smidge over 80 deg and stays there solid, no matter how much stop/start.

My car also had a bad oil leak from the front goal post seal. Turned out someone had tried to repair this in the past and bodged it - seal was in terrible shape from poor fitting. New camshaft seal and new goal post seal has sorted it.

Big thanks to all that helped with advice along the way on this thread and via PM. Special mention to Gaz2N who is a bloody legend - many thanks mate!

Lovely to have the car back, I love my purring 2.6 :)

Nice you got it sorted, although it must have hurt writing the cheque. :'(

Erm, what's a goal post seal?

Was a tad painful, mainly due to the fact that it's the kind of job I'm very happy to tackle myself, but alas life is too busy so I had to pay someone else to do it :(

Goal post seal - it's the seal on the front of the top part of the cyl head, immediately behind the distributor. I think the rocker cover has to be removed to access it. Goal post shaped: 103 015 0220

Mine had been fitted by a monkey - was badly replaced recently and spewing oil out over the front of the engine. The camshaft seal was also very badly fitted which wasn't helping matters.

I bought a genuine water pump, made by SKF. No doubt I could find the same pump a lot cheaper on the net.

buycarparts.co.uk is great, the website cross references a part number and usually lists a whole load of parts/brands.

You can get SKF pumps quite cheap here. About €135.

The genuine/SKF pump, even just in your hand, way better than the cheaper pumps. Its nice, weighty metal and the bearing is super smooth. I had a Circoli pump before which only lasted a year and had to return a few after that which didn't fit or just looked too rubbish to fit.

The website I just listed has the SKF for a 2.0 for £65, I paid about £150 at MB! You have to put a part number in, nothing comes up with a reg.

I've used a few SKF timing belt kits. They seem to use Gates belts, and conversely Gates kits have SKF pulleys.

Just had my water pump replaced at the local Halfords Autocentre - £137 and belt £24.80. Free thermostat and antifreeze. No maker marks on it - but 12 month/12,000 mile guarantee so will see how it goes!

Hi chaps, most of this thread is helping me out with fixing my cars loss of water recently diagnosed as being a leak from the pump. I want to sort this problem but I've got to do it cheap as poss due to most of my earnings going on slowly fixing my house up and providing my nearly two year old daughter. I found a febi pump on eBay for around £100, any good? and will need that short pipe that goes between the head and the pump( dealer part?). Any advice very much appreciated thanks.

Bought a genuine dealer pump for mine (out of desperation, it was super expensive) and its made by SKF.

Bought an SKF for my CLK from mister-auto - have a look on there see if they stock them for the 2.6 as you can't go wrong.

Febi are a bit hit & miss, depends who their supplier for the part is.

Water pump is not a part to cheap out on, can say that from experience :-/

Found a reasonably priced pair of skf pumps on mister auto, one of which has an extra outlet at the pully end. My cars a 91, anyone know which one I need or would it be as obvious as looking under the bonnet and counting hoses going into it?
