I'm no expert, but in the first instance I have used additive to the diff, but there was only a minor effect on reducing the whine. With the transmission, i'm pretty sure you have to have it running up to temp, and the stick is there to check the consistency of the oil. if its like water, then obviously you change it |

Yes engine must warmed up and running in P to check level. Take it for a run, go through all the gears(including reverse) then park it on level ground. The ATF level should be between the two lines on the stick once it's hot. It might be a bit below min if it's not up to temperature. If it's below just put a small amount in at a time(via dipstick tube) and check again. You don't want to go over max. |

1 Has any one added Molly slip to an auto Gear box to solve a gearbox whine and would it be recommended No. Never. Automatic gearboxes are amazing mechanisms, and there is even a patent called "the amazing mechanism", but Automatics have clutch packs also called clutch cages which contain small clutches with friction material similar to your brake pads or a manual clutch. If these slip, they will wear and burn quickly. So the fluid constitution is finely balanced to lubricate the bearings, while allowing friction in the clutch packs. And that is fine balance; this is why off-brand fluids seem to change the shift slightly. Its ironic or unfortunate that automatics produce clutch-dust overtime which contaminates their own lubrication. Have you tried fresh MB fluid? As a last bandage, before an inevitable overhaul, people try some wild ideas to buy an extra week or month. 2 when you check auto transmission level do you check it when warm and engine running or engine off warm, off. 3 where should the level sit on the stick Look at the tip of the stick. What does the current fluid look like? Is it red or brown? does it have a sparling alluvial metallic property? How does it smell? Burnt? sulpherous? Like kerosene? How many seconds does it take to change gears? 4 can you top up the level by removing the dip stick and topping up via the dipstick tube Yes. slowly.

+1, The first thing to do is check the condition of the oil. If dubious then change the oil by draining the gearbox and the torque converter, replace the filter in the gearbox sump and when all secure refill the oil with MB recommended fluid! This often solves whining noises from the gearbox. |

Siphon a small amount out of the gearbox and pour some onto Spam Spam Spam Spam roll. Leave to evaporate and see what left in the paper, also gives you a true representation of the colour and the smell. |
