Hi guys, Just wondering what changes were made to the 2.5-16 dog leg shifter linkages compared to the 2.3-16 ones. I used to have the 2.3-16 from new and had it for ten years, now a 1989 2.5-16 second hand. Whereas the old version fitted to the 2.3-16 was stiff, not so direct and notchy, my 2.5-16 is butter smooth in comparison and makes it such a pleasurable to drive and it makes me look forward to changing gears all the time. Cheers, James |

Hi James they both used the Getrag 275z gearbox. I think what your new 2.5 has maybe new bushings or the wonderful Bronze ones which makes a massive change. or maybe just the new rubber ones? or fresh 1.6L of gearbox oil ? Chris |

The gearboxes are interchangeable and it's a matter of luck if the previous owner (s) had any empathy. They are LHD 'boxes, after all, and need care. I think that the innards are similar to the BMW M3. But the original bushings are a bit of a shortcut. |

Read in Autozine.com: 'Apart from performance, 2.5-16 had a number of areas improved. Its gearchange was made slightly easier. Its seats were improved. Rear passengers got marginally more legroom. The steering became stiffer and less prone to kickback around the straight-ahead. Not so successful was the new ASD electronically controlled hydraulic variable LSD. In theory, it could improve roadholding and cornering precision with its computer-determined locking ratio, which varied between 35 and 100 percent depending on conditions. In reality, it made the handling more unpredictable and power slide more difficult to access. Few motoring journalists welcomed this feature. Nevertheless, ASD would have a great future in motorsport, so introducing it to the road car was just a means to get homologation'. (Quote) Or maybe you guys are right in a way. I did install new OEM bushings which could be some late(improved?) version after all the complains. I suspect too I inherited a short shifter too as the throw is much shorter than I used to know from my previous 2.3 16v. I'm also using Redline D6 ATF whereas my previous car was using Merc's own ATF. Anyway would be nice to know if there were real shifter component updates for the 2.5-16 as I can recommend part numbers to a friend of mine. |
