I'm looking for some advice on my Autobox issue. Some short history.. 145k miles on my car and since I owned it, this car always preferred selecting forward gears better than reverse.. Ie , all forward gears work completely to my satisfaction, smooth enough changes kick down, after Bowden adjustment all Good.. Reverse has always been delayed and going in with a bang. I have just changed out 6 litres of Atf by draining box and converter. + new filter with hopes of a better performance. Old ATF was brownish?. The change did appear to make a difference, meaning if I went from drive to reverse multiple times, all changes were with a positive shift and immediate. but.. I notice, when I have been for a short drive, and the car up to temp, selection of reverse is impossible.. This seems to be a pattern..overnight cool down.. Able to select reverse from cold.. Drive a mile or two, still ok making the changes between d and reverse multiple times.. Drive further, car up to temp.. Not possible to select reverse.. .. 3 hours cool down.. Ok again. I have checked ATF level many times.. Experimented by pumping out fluid to run with it at lower level, added fluid for a higher level, tried lucas stop slip( hoping that was a magic cure) still problem exists. I accept if the box has gone.. Then OK.. I have to replace it. but the fact that it drives so well forwards, works good when cold in reverse that it can be so drastic. Maybe a clue is that the revs drops significantly when selecting reverse.. ..( even though it does not engage)but if I hold the revs up, that does not help. I am wondering if anything electrical can be stopping the reverse selection.. Any thoughts on anything other than the box is shot? Thanks. |

Hi mate, I had a similar issue, I ended up having the gearbox recon. By the way I've got a spare 2.5 16v auto gearbox. My old gearbox eventually gave up and lost reverse before the recon. Edited by Cosworth, Mon May 11, 2015 9:15 pm.

Update to this.. Bought a replacement Autobox from virdi and jay'Cosworth' ... Fitted this (on my driveway) over the last few days .. A daunting task to swap this over but honestly not too bad once you get stuck in and prepare for some serious hours work. Today was fingers crossed day to test if what I was told was true, that the box was a goodun ...bottom line is all now good. Wanted to say how nice these guys are to deal with. Thanks... And Jay, the blaupunkt looks and sounds the part too! Thanks. So anyone doing this. It is practical to do this alone on level ground with the car raised the height of standard car ramps under 4 wheels. |

There's only really 3 things that can wrong with a auto box, the torque convertor, the oil pump and the multiple plate wet clutch (like fitted in a motorbike) there is an adjustment on the multiple wet clutch to allow for wear and tear but this has to be done by a professional. if that is what is wrong with it, I dare say it was due a reconditioning. |

OK, interesting.. So now I have this box and converter as a surplus.. probably good to no one as is, so maybe I find out what is inside and see if the reverse only issue is obvious.. best way to learn!.. enjoying being able to park where I like now. recon costs of 1200 quid + vat seem steep.. I appreciate these are specialist things to work on. |
