If it's because you are only counting two gear changes, these gearboxes set off in second gear unless you pre-select first or floor the throttle pedal.

Try jacking up the rear end and turn by hand, I'm guessing you have checked all the levels ? Good luck

In fact try to spray some WD40 on the kickdown switch as if it is sticking it's also trying to downshift hence not going into 4 gear , good luck

Just spray some WD40 in the switch first as it maybe sticking ? What happens is that it try's to down shift hence not going into top, the oil you need to change too and the filter, it could be a stuck valve too? Gearbox filter I mean and gearbox oil ,Check the vacuum tubes too, if that does not work it could be the pressure . But do the WD40 kickdown switch first you should be able to disconnect it and spray inside etc, if you get stuck let me know good luck

3500+ rpm at 70 is correct, unfortunately. An easy way to check you have all 4 gears is to pre=select first. To do this, Put the gear selector into second and hold it there for a few seconds or so, then move it back up to 3 or D and then move off. Now count how many gear changes there are.
First gear is very short and is intended for hill starts etc. If you haven't moved off with your foot flat to the floor yet, you won't have encountered first gear. Have the gearbox in S (standard) for best effect.

4th gear speed per 1000rpm should be 37 km/h for the 2.5d auto. 70mph = 112 kmph. Engine speed should be 112/37 x 1000 rpm - about 3000rpm. Sounds like the diff final drive is not what it should be and either the diff has been changed or the car was not originally a 2.5d auto..any chance of it being a manual originally? The difference in FD ratio between manual and auto diffs would explain the discrepency.

3rd gear speed should be 24.9 km/h per 1000rpm which equates to about 4500rpm at 70mph which is close to the red line. So I think you have all four gears. Just the wrong diff. Diff ratio should be 3.07 as per the 2.6 190E.

You really should not be talking about Changing diffs , one thing at a time did you check and clean the kick down switch ?

I think you should heed stu on this one and don't look too far into it as it will end up costing you time and money, or change to a manual shift.
