hello
since yesterday ive noticed that whenever my car changes from 2nd to 3rd it revs right up then changes, like its slipping.
what can cause it, could it be the modulator on the gearbox or would that cause problems for all the gears.

or could it just be that I need to change the oil and filter?

any help is appreciated as its really annoying when setting off

It's called flaring between shifts. Plenty of info on the web but here's a thread about it with a potential fix.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/311017-sudden-transmission-flaring-91-300e.html

It involves changing the K1 spring in the gearbox. Not that hard to do whilst you have the sump off to change the oil and filter.

Here's a thread about it, http://mercedes-190.co.uk/topic/6721725/1/

try search videos like this first this guy is boring but hes good

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM4KZvwsCW0

id start with changing the oil and filter and check the condition of the oil, colour, oil smell etc. Pour some on a piece of Spam Spam Spam Spam towel and let it dry it will reveal and contaminates.

Good luck

Wowww really? We in the garage would never do that in a million years before checking the modulator! Once you have done that then you can go onto the next steps, good luck

Don't do it. If you had a modulation problem, you'd notice it across all the gear ranges. You have your answer...2-3 flares are almost always caused by a weak or broken K1 spring. You need to pull the pan and filter when you replace it, so this one repair covers a lot of potential problem areas.

Hi fellas
I changed my k1 spring by following a guide i found on the forum, i also changed the filter and fluid and topped it up to the correct level. However i still have the flare between 2nd and 3rd. What else can cause this issue as its frustrating me alot now

do I need to drop the gearbox a bit to adjust the modulator,
it seems very tight to get my hands in?

I also noticed that once the gearbox is up to temperature it doesn't flare, well its not noticeable

You or someone needs to test the pressure of the modulator first before you do anything or you will not know how much to adjust or if it's leaking, regards chris
