You could just redo head gasket. It's definitely an M103(12valve)? |

Ticking usually the hydraulic lifters. No big deal. Up to you but that still seems the easiest option to me. Obviously if the head's warped you may think again, as I would. Edited by eagle3, Sun Dec 18, 2016 1:12 pm.

Can all be done with engine in car. Rear seal - easier to remove gearbox(and change clutch while you're at it). Anyway, worth a look before writing off. |

a Little Update. Had the Engine head Pulled Out.Turned Out I had a Disastrous Leak in the Head Gasket and Some Rot in the Head It Self. at Cylinder 5-6. which was Causing the Over Heating.water and oil Was pouring back and Forth Between oil Lines/water lines and the top of the Piston.and Also, a Slight Twist in the Head too !!! Got the Head Filled and Machined .Changed the head Gasket and All Sealants in the Front on the Engine. the Engine is A lot More Responsive and feels more Powerful and the Temp Is Spot on. I Just came Back from my Short Vacation to Jordan and Had a Lengthy Talk with a Friend of Mine who Does Engine Swaps as Casually as Filling Gas. He Put a 1UZ V8 Engine in His 81 Toyota Cressida " Just to Check if he can" and Turned out He Could. Pulled it back Out and Returned the original R21 Engine in for the MOT and then Put the 1UZ back In Over the week End!! and Just for the Fun Of it He Put a 1g-GTE in his 79 Cressida , Didn't Last Very long Until He Pulled it out and Fitted a 1JZ in there! Told him about the Plans "more like Dreams" that I wanted to Get the car Faster and more Powerful by Installing a 36 AMG Engine. or any Other method. he Simply Took a look at the Engine and said " will, I can EFI it for you and then Super Charge it. it will Be more than Enough" . he advised me to use an Opel "Vauxhaul" 6 Cylinder Engine Harness in addition to the M104 Fuel Line and Get the Timing from the Coil and So on."keeping the Original Ignition" I know the M103 have Been boosted up to 7 PSI on Stock Internals with No problems. now I DO Trust his Fabrication abilities, But .... I have one Concern. what about the Vacuum Operated things.. He assured that using a One way Valve or Some thing" I am Clueless here" there will Be No Problem. but what about the 722.3 Gear Box. will It Function properly under Boost. expecting that there Might Be Vacuum Related problems! because I remember that the Gearbox had a Vacuum hose for Some Reason! can Any One advise! The gearbox is a bit of a questionmark i've no idea how it would respond to boost but for the rest of the system its no biggie. There's plenty of vacuum reserve and its not like you'll be braking and accelerating at the same time, if its a problem you could always put an electronic or mechanical vacuum pump in or an extra vacuum accumulator in.

so, while Trying to Make the JEEP Fan Fit my Merc, this Guy Shows Up!!![]() ![]() Top Bloke.Turns out He is a Merc Fan and when He Saw me Still Dragging my Jaw looking around his Freshly painted Clean Looking 190, he Simply Popped the Hood For Me and pointed at the Engine while Smiling From Ear to Ear. "M104 3.2 With a Getrag Gearbox " He Said!!!!

Mohammad going back to you post about the plug gaps .Can i ask what gaps you have them set at now after rebuild ?. You see my 103 head was rebuilt some years ago .Not by me , but the first owner had it done .So as i have fitted new plugs a few times over the period of time in my ownership i set them to 0.8 mm i know they should be more but dont know what to set them to. Nice car by the way .But look after it .Treat it like an old woman she is getting on now as you know. |

I Hate it when an Issue is Kept Unsolved or the OP doesn't Get back to the Member with the Result of their Suggestions. well, seems i Became that Person unwillingly. due to Family matters and the arrival Of our Newest Family Member , a Baby Girl . and the Huge amount of Work that Kept me very busy trying to Balance things, I was Unable to inspect the Old Issues of my Car. Finally , Yesterday I got the Chance Check my Spark Plugs and their Gaps. I found almost all of them had different Gaps. I used to think they came Pre gaped ! a couple where too widely gaped others had Nearly no Gap! using a feeler gauge i gaped them all to 0.7 MM. I can tell that the Engine has more torque now.or at least smoother torque. but the main issue is still there and the Engine Still Knocks under heavy Load and only does so between 4K-5K while the AC is on or if I have more than 2 People in the car.. I think I need to Increase the Gap, but how far can/should I go? |

so, an update. the Knocking Issue is Still not Solved and is only Being handeled by adding octane booster or using 95+ octane. on the other hand, a major step in regards of the gearbox! well, I finally had the chance to Convert the good old Janet from Auto to Manual. at first, it was a 717.450 that a friend of Mine had laying around .waited for 6 days for the mechanic to finish this Bloody conversion only to Find out that the 5th and Reverse Gears keep Popping out. and the mechanic Didn't even have the well to Just Check what was the Problem with it. and to Avoid further Problems with him Since I was Starting to lose my Temper , I decided to heck it and Install any Other Manual GB. and Ended up with the Shitty 717.430. with long ratios and very sticky Shifting combined with my 3.27 Rear Diff, the car Felt very heavy and un-enjoyable at all.the GB Kept Making all Sorts of Noises and Felt very disconnected from the Car Some how.it felt like I have a very heavy mass being hanged from center of the car like a pendulum.and to add Insult to Injury , the Shifter was not Connected Correctly and the whole thing was a mess. Since I had very hard time Finding any Parts related to a Manual GB/W124 here In Tabuk/KSA , and the Holidays that came along. I had to To Travel to Jordan. where I was Invited by the Jordanian Classic Car Owners Club to a Time Attack Event Held on a Small Track "Smart performance Track" . it was Very Friendly and Fun based Event that had more than 28 cars from a very Various Spectrums of the car Culture. Some were real Classics Like a Mini , MK1 Golf GTI, Porsche 914 and an Old Rally ALFA. to Caterham ,BMW M6 ,Porsche 928, Clio RS, a 1JZ Converted 89 Cressida and yours Truly my W124 among a variety of others. knowing that I am Going to throw away that Shitbox 717.430, I just Pushed it very Hard. the car Performed acceptably on the small Track and I Drove on 2nd Gear for most of the Time. after my First Run , the GB Started to Whine Like hell on 2nd Gear. my Brother Went in for his Run on the Same Car. Just to Make the Whine Worse. after 3 Runs Each for total 6 runs, the car Did Very Good and we Placed 1st"my Brother" and 2nd "me "on our Class against the Cressida and the M6 which Came 3rd and 4th. and 6th and 7th over all. I recon, Not Bad for the 1st time on the Track with that kind of GB . quite Happy with the Result.I Knew for Sure I needed to Change the Gearbox. after a Couple of Days of search , Finally I got the Call that some one Found me a 717.404 Long Story Short, Turns out the Mechanic didn't install the bearing that must go in the Flywheel. also, the Whole Clutch pack was not Centered and the Pressure plate was in a very Disastrous shape to start with .all that caused the Gearbox to be Fried and all the eccentric Motion wreaked havoc . I am Glad no Damage was Done to the Crank Shaft or the the crank Shaft bearing. eventually , I had the 404 in and whole thing Tidy and Properly installed by a real "mechanic" this time. the car Feels very lively and light .Shifting is much Better , the whole Gearbox is awesome.the Ratios are on the Shorter Range specially for my usual highway commute , but over all the 1:1 Ratio on 5th is the same as the 4th gear 1:1 on my original 722.4 Auto box. which i can Live with. really happy after all. Hi Mohammad, I don't think that I saw this thread before - it's a great read! Belated congratulations on the arrival of your baby girl I hope all's going well for you all with your new generation Mercedes Benz fan ![]() That 190 was cool - when he met you working on your W124 he was probably very happy to have found a kindred spirit. That sounds like fun on the track, well done on getting the gold and silver medals Regarding your new new manual gearbox, isn't it great when you change to something that feels right after a while with something that just felt wrong?! I hope you have many happy miles / kilometers motoring with it!Best Regards, ConorD |

hello ,Mate. thanks a lot for your Kind words. me and that 190 Owner are good Friends Now. I tried to Buy it from Him but Due to the Compact Size of the W201 Compared to the W124 and the Family Duties I have to Run , I think the W124 is a Better Choice. on the Track it was So much Fun.the Car performed much better than what I thought.it was Composed and on the Safer Sides of both Over Steer and Under steer .I Noticed that if the Car Tends to Understeer, Just Floor it and you will be good to Go. the Gearbox is fantastic. I am Loving it more and more every Time I Drive the Car. Edited by Mohammad, Today, 6:10 AM.
