Hi guys my Mum's 190d 2.0l manual seems to have a small amount of oily residue in the coolant tank. It's not a thick goo and none in the dipstick or under oil cap. Is it a possible head gasket seal? It does not overheat and has only just started. Any advice welcome. How long is it to do a head gasket yourself at home? Thanks Regards Danny |

Get some1 to run a pressure test on it, could be dirt in header tank, unless you remove and clean it, if it comes back then head gasket, signs of mixture can be header tank or dipstick end. Best of luck. |

Hi all, I have cleaned out the header tank and the oil has come back again. Guess it's a head off job. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this before on a diesel 190? It's never got hot and still doesn't. I heard them going on the petrol models but not a diesel. Will keep you updated and post some photos when I get chance. Regards Danny |

They don't have a heat exchanger oil cooler do they like on the m103 engines ? Potential area for water oil mixture there. Around the diesel circles i follow the om603 turbo engines are sort of known for having weak HG's so might be prevalent in the 602 too.

HG fails aren't common, but that gasket is old now like everything else. Have a good read through the procedure in Haynes first, Danny, before you take it on. There may be special tools needed - if the fan needs to be removed I recall seeing the diesel fan needs a special tool to get it off. Re. how long it will take, I did my first HG with my 1.8 a couple of years ago and it took ages because I was learning as I went along. Doing anything in a garage with a car on axle stands take a hell of a lot longer than a pro can manage. I'm not surprised it's never overheated, by the way. I never knew the fan to kick in on mine, even fully loaded dragging up big long hills, or sitting in traffic jams on hot days. I was always dead impressed with that. Thanks for the replies guys My diesels don't have oil coolers, don't know if it was the turbos that had them. Greek taxi, your right I've never had the fan come on neither. I had a Vauxhall combo with a HG problem and that would overheat after 5 minutes at idle! I will be doing it myself and thanks for the heads up about the fan removal. Should I do anything else at the same time as this? Apart from probably glow plugs and IP O rings. Danny Edited by danny 1984, Mon Apr 10, 2017 8:42 pm.

Hi - I too am facing the very same issue. Car drive lovely, no lack of power, no smoke, oil and dipstick shows no indication oil coolant however there is oil or black stuff in my coolant. I got 190D 2.5. I wonder if you ever got to know the issue with your car. Your reply will be highly appreciated. |

Most likely to be the head gasket. Flush and back flush the coolant system but the oil will probably return. At least you have got the waterways cleared. Have the coolant system pressure tested, this may prove the head gasket. |
