Hi, I've recently picked up my new 190D and I've noticed it has poor cold starting. The symptoms align with air ingress as it behaves very similarly to my Corsa when I had air ingress issues; the car cranks for around 7-8 seconds at which point it fires up but almost immediately conks out, it does this 2-4 times before firing up successful. Once warm it starts on the button like my old 190d used to. The car has been run on veg for a long time and is still currently running on veg so I suspect the o-rings have perished somewhere in the system. The previous owner has replaced the fuel line from the tank to the engine bay, cleaned the in-tank strainer, renewed the leak-off pipes and he's also fitted an ebay in-line strainer (I assume these were all changed in attempt to solve this problem). From searching the forum I can see it is possibly the O-rings on the top of the IP, I haven't inspected these yet but the car doesn't leak any fluids on the floor. Are there any other likely culprits? The fuel filter has been changed recently as have the glow plugs. Once I've used up this tank of veg I will put some diesel in it but I really don't think this is the problem. Cheers, |

Hi mate, Are you running on 100% veg as this could be the issue. Try starting by giving the glow plugs two heat ups, where I mean turn on the ignition, wait for the light to go out, turn off ignition, then turn back on, wait again for glow plug light to go out and start engine. Hope this helps. If not it may well be the o rings on the top of the injection pump. Fairly easy to replace. Have done mine and got them from the dealer for not much money. Danny |

Yes its running 100% but I always have done in my previous 190 and it started no probs. I do usually give the glow plugs two goes but its almost certainly air in the system, if you dont press the accelerator it will turn over for 20-30 seconds and then just conk out once it does start; with a bit of throttle it strarts within 5-10 seconds. I checked the O-rings and they are leaking so I will be changing them tomorrow with some viton ones that I sourced, hoping this solves the issue but I'm not optimistic. Cheers, |

Which o rings are you referring to? I know you said IP but I'm not sure what that stands for. |

The delivery valve O-rings on top of the Injection Pump (IP). Done them now but not solved starting problem, needed to be done anyway but would've nice to kill two birds with one stone

OK I've changed the delivery valve seals with some Viton O-rings which I sourced and that's now sorted. This hasn't stopped the slow starting issue but I did get a chance to have a look around the car and get to know it a bit better as well as look at potential root causes.... There is no visible air getting into the system, the pre-filter and all the clear lines show no signs of air ingress whilst running or prior to cold starting in the morning. The hard and flexible fuel lines have all been replaced by the previous owner and are all in good condition. The pre-filter was pretty dirty so I swapped it out and I will also change the main filter tonight. Next step will be to check the glow plugs, might get round to this tonight so will post results. I may also put some diesel in tonight as its nearly empty. |

Put some diesel in last night and it started on half a turn of the key this morning, so all is good with the car its just the veg oil being a bit thick due to low temps I'll add some petrol to the next batch.I'm going to try some water mist injection and also do a diesel purge this weekend.
