I got a 2.5D and the injectors on Nos. 1 and 2 cylinders were puffing when the engine was running. The injector threads had been crossed, and when I installed new injectors (which had new threads obviously) the problem wasn't cured. It needed new steel inserts that screw into the head. I don't have the tool so I can't do it. I took it to an independent MB specialist. MB in that case stands for 'Mug the Barstuards' when referring to their customers. They took over three weeks to do the job, even though they had a week's notice before I took it in. Eventually after a great deal of lying to me, they said it was ready. I went to collect it and they tried to charge me £130 MORE than they had quoted. After that was sorted out I went out to the car and turned the ignition on. No glow plug light. I gave it 5 seconds and started the engine. Cough splutter bang pop, clouds of blue smoke enveloped the car. When I took it in originally it started on the button. There was no way I was going back into that garage so I drove home. Glow Plugs Nos 1 and 2 were open circuit so off with the manifold - I can't see how you can do it without removing the manifold, and out with the old glow plugs. I took some photos of what came out, glow plugs and they look as if they have been chopped by some tool or other. My feeling is that when this garage removed the old inserts and installed the new ones, they must have chopped off the ends. Can anyone confirm that the tips of the glow plugs are directly below the injector steel inserts, or Prechambers? The prechamber part number is A6010102952. There are other items they charged for, including two other prechambers parts Nos. A6045890109 and A6675890363. Of course they also charged me £15 to replace the new spill hoses I had just fitted, and for thread rings (4 of), Seal rings (4 of), rubber caps (?1 of). Then they added a list of things that need renewing on the car which totalled about £3000 including labour. The one and only item on this list that was older than three months was the rear steel brake pipes. They couldn't even bother themselves to actually look at the air filter and see that it was brand new. The final straw was that apparently my car needs an air conditioning service, at £69 plus VAT. The car doesn't have air conditioning. So as (in my opinion) this bunch of to55ers have broken two of my glow plugs, what I need is some knowledgeable person to confirm that the glow plugs are directly below the injectors and that when changing the inserts (Prechambers) the glow plugs would get broken if the job wasn't done properly. What would be best of all is if someone could post a workshop manual picture here or point me to an official MB web page where it says that glow plugs must be removed before changing the prechambers. Of course if I can get this verification I will charge them for the work I had to do to replace the glow plugs, at their £96 an hour rate, plus materials. And what happened to the bits of plug that they chopped off? Where are they and what damage did they do before they were blown down the exhaust pipe? |

Have a look HERE. 01-417 the very first pictures give you an idea. The sleeves that hold the pre-chambers in place can be removed by a special tool and replaced with new ones. The thread for the injectors is in these. The glowplugs should have been removed before any of this work is carried out as the pre-chambers will probably twist when the sleeve is removed. Frankly I would be asking myself if they left the glowplug tips in the cylinders if they are the bodgers you portray! Hope this has helped although I would be thinking of getting the car inspected and making a claim for compensation if they have cocked up! Speak to them first though and see if they are prepared to rectify it FOC. |

the hot end of the glow plug fits directly into the pre chamber. The injector screws into the neck of the pre chamber which is secured into the head with a internal splined collar, sealing the injector is a soft metal shaped washer. If the glow plugs are not removed before the pre chambers the hot end of the glow plug snaps off falling into the base of the pre chambe. There is no way the broken ends can fall into the combustion valve area. All five of the glow plugs can be removed without removing the induction manifold. |

Thanks for the replies chaps. I went to the official Merc dealer yesterday and they very helpfully gave me copies of these diagrams and showed me that the glow plugs fit into holes in the prechambers. I was very impressed with their helpfulness even though they weren't going to get the job. I did try to remove the glow plugs without removing the manifold but I just couldn't. I do have 1/4 drive, 3/8 drive socket sets but just couldn't see how to do it without removing the manifold, so that is what I did. Further, I noticed that the wires feeding the glow plugs had captive nuts on the end, which would be essential, but some of them didn't have captive nuts, they had fallen out some time in the past and ordinary nuts had been used to replace them. I have some questions: Most importantly as it constituted a large part of the cost of the job, did they need to replace the prechambers when the fault was crossed threads where the injector screws into the threaded ring, part 112a on page 417 of the document? I would have thought there was no fault with the prechambers, just the threaded rings. How would I know if the snapped off parts of the glow plugs are in the prechamber? Do you think they snapped off the glow plugs, then realised they would have to remove the prechamber? Presumably the snapped off part could be shaken out of the prechamber? I was charged for some parts I don't understand. Can you explain what the parts are? Bear in mind that they were working on two cylinders, so why is there only one of some items? A00115896509 Thread ring £14.63 Qty 1 Why one? A6045890109 Prechamber £19.14 Qty 1 Why one? A6675890363 Prechamber £29.26 Qty 1 Why one?, and why is it different to the other prechamber? A6010170203 Thread ring £16.50 Qty 2 Why is this different to the other thread ring? A6010102952 Prechamber £92.50 Qty 2 How is this different to the other two types of prechamber? I would be very grateful for answers to the above questions. Edited by gasgas, Wed May 3, 2017 5:46 pm.
