Smoking manifold!; Could it be an oil leak?

Hi All,

My 2.6 has recently started producing smoke from the exhaust intake manifold. It starts after a few minutes of engine running. I've just replaced the valve cover gasket as it needed doing anyway and cleaned all around the block and manifold. However , the problem persists...

It's hard to see exactly where the smoke starts but it's definitely around the 6th intake. I figure it's a perished gasket that's letting oil leak and burn. Anyone had a similar problem?

Hello - you've mentioned both intake and exhaust manifold, but I'm guessing you mean exhaust.
It could be leaking oil that is burning off.
Alternatively, it could be a leak of exhaust smoke, but if so you'd hear it 'chuffing'.

Since you've been changing the cam cover gasket, it's 99% likely that an oil leak is the cause.
Did you follow the tightening sequence? The cam cover bolts are screwed in at a pretty low torque, too.

The smoking started before changing the gasket. Sorry , I've seen people refer to it differently - I mean the exhaust manifold. There is no chuffing from the engine.

If you suspect it's burning oil, you could heat up some oil to smoking point... if it whiffs the same you've got your answer.
Then it's just a question of finding the leak.
Remember, oil can travel some distance, and given the airflow under a bonnet it will be pushed from front to back. So the leak is quite possibly nowhere near the exhaust manifold where it is burning off.
