air con compressor removal

My air con hasn't worked for years on my 190d 2.5.. . the gas has all leaked away I'm sure. What I would like to do is remove the compressor and fit the shorter poly v belt. Has anyone done this? Can anyone offer any advice on how to do this job. Thanks guys
