1990 190E Starting Issue; Starts, stops, starts, stops...........starts and runs !

Well this is my only my second posting to the forum and it concerns a problem I have encountered since buying my 1990 190E 2.6. I am sure as I being the sorting out of this lovely Baby Benz I will be back with more questions and in the longer term I hope to be able to repay by helping other owners once I become familiar with this model.
When starting the car either cold or warm occasionally the engine will start quickly but suddenly shut down. It will do this several times before finally staying running . There are no issues with idle speed or smoothness of engine when running. From what I have read on this and other forums I am leaning toward the fuel relay or OVP relay as being the most likely cause. I have only owned the car for less than a week so I haven't even started to replace fuel filter yet so before I begin I would like to resolve this mystery. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Norseman next time it starts and stops remove a spark plug wire and pop in an old spark plug .Use a stick to hold the plug over the metal part on the existing plug in the engine .You then need a second person to try and start the engine . Make sure its in park and brake on. Do you have a spark ? Do this and we will go to the nextstap.

optimusprime, Thank you and I appreciate your prompt response. I am reasonably familiar with the mechanics and electronics of automobiles but not this particular model. Is this a common problem for this model and if so is there a solution that that has been discovered as the most likely cause?

Also check the brushes in the alternator regulator. Low voltage to the ECU can cause this issue.

Stoat, Thanks for the top. I will be sure to check alternate output. Battery is new and fully charged.
