got to get a Haynes manual.
when car is stationary the car is surrounded by car fumes.
Can't be much wrong, it starts first time, every time, runs like a watch and does 35-40mpg.
could the engine breather pipes be blocked?

I would first start wth the rocker box removal .Clean it all out inside, let it soak over night .Refit with a new gasket ..And like you said , clean out all the hoses .Leaking hose will let fumes out instead of burning them up .. Oil leaks will do just the same as they burn off on the hot parts of the engine ..Oil in the plug holes from leaking rocker box gasket burning off is another place to check .This will stop if you replace the reocker box seal or gasket. Good luck

I had this problem with mine. I found that the problem was oil getting out from the head gasket and onto the exhaust. The air intake let this into the car interior. The fix was to remove the cylinder head and replace the gasket. The MB gasket has seals round the oil gallery holes. Over 20+ years these get hard and let oil leak. It took me about 3 days to do the job as you have to get a special tool for the head bolts and fit new head bolts when re-assembling. In addition you will need to get a slide hammer with a 6mm screw thread on the end to remove a dowel from the timing chain section.
Now everything is good with no oil leaks!

Thanks for the advice lads.
I cannot see any oil on the exhaust but will take a very close look at the rocker cover first, a head gasket is obviously a much bigger job but as you say fumes would be drawn in through the air intake.
Once you pull away though the smell of fumes are gone and when stationary in traffic etc you do not smell them, its odd.
Will have to try your suggestions, many thanks.

check your last mot test emissions result. abnormally low CO reading could mean a lean condition caused by air leaks affecting combustion. Usually goes along with daft high mpg figures.
