Hello All, last week I heard some unusual 'clacking' at the top of my om601 engine, and noticed that my belt tensioner assembly needed help. I replaced the arm, idler pulley, shock and heavy spring and the noise went away. This engine has never run better... at 242,000 miles. Today was oil change day. Pulling off the sump drain plug, i retrieved about 10x 5mm ball bearings!! see pic below The vacuum pump has not been changed in the 20 years I've owned the motor. Is this a classic pump failure or should I be thinking of something else also? Of course I will change this pump, but I could use advice on what else I should check and address in fixing this situation. How do I go about cleaning the crankcase? Many thanks! ![]() |

I think you're right, it's the vac pump that has spilled its ball bearings. My vac pump did the same but I never fished the bearings out of the sump, they are still in there. You'll know when you take the vac pump off - it will be a rattling mess. They can still work without bearings, but I'm amazed you haven't heard it. Mine made a loud tapping. I reckon you'll have found all the bearings - my sump plug isn't magnetic like yours. Even if some remain they can't go anywhere since the oil pick-up on the oil pump has a mesh over it. Thanks my 'Greek' Friend for your help! So if I lift up the engine a wee bit off of the cross-member so I can remove the sump pan, cleaning the pickup and sump with diesel fuel would be satisfactory? What about changing the oil and filter frequently thereafter? (precautionary for any steel filings circulating in the system) I really don't want to hurt any bearings or clog any oil galleries, as I depend on this motor.... I have a spare engine where I can rob anyother components (like an arm?) which might've suffered in this bearing failure, as I change the pump. I wonder if there is anything else I need to be aware of... Thanks All for your interest! Will update this post as I address it, after my holiday. |
