Had the cam cover off the other day searching for a suspected oil leak (think it was the oil filler cap in the end which i've replaced today). While it was off i noticed the camshafts are stamped with Mercedes part numbers. Since Cosworth developed and produced the head I expected the top end parts to bear their mark as well. I was just wondering what exactly they manufactured for the 2.3-16, if anything, besides the head ? Thanks ![]() |

Pretty much everything, really, down as far as the pistons. Cosworth were able to take the contract due to having their own foundry and the Mercedes contract was their biggest yet. Essentially, though, it was a camshaft company first and foremost and the first engine produced 278 horsepower when built and tested in Germany. It used Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, which can bring problems of its own, with massive fuel pressure required. This was ridiculous grunt for a 2.3, but Cosworth had screwed over 400 horsepower out of the DFV, so it was not unexpected. I'd love to build an original-spec engine... |

That's good to know, I read somewhere they manufactured some heads for Vauxhall in the 90's as well. Not sure what engine it was on but the non-Cosworth heads all suffered head gasket problems while the Cosworth ones were fine. I did wonder whether Cosworth may have initially designed and produced some of the parts on the 2.3-16 and then Mercedes did them in house, as with the later 2.5-16's. Anyone had any experience of trying to get new replacement parts for these engines, I'm guessing you've more chance of finding a couple of grand stuffed down the back of the sofa ? !! |
