Hi guys a quick question. Going to flush out engine and radiator and renew coolant with G48, my question is how much do I need is 5l enough? And also what do I top up with? Normal water or distilled? Thanks in advance. Danny Edited by danny 1984, Wed Aug 16, 2017 5:26 pm.

Hi Danny No idea what G48 is, but the system takes about 8-10 litres. Haynes will have the exact figure, but it's way more than 5-litres if you're using a pre-mix coolant. Personally I would simply use any brand of ethylene glycol, about 40% glycol to water, and replace after two years. No brand is better than another, since it's a simple chemical. On old cars it's common to have to drop the coolant out, so cheap is good. If you are in a soft water area, that will be fine, or buy de-ionised stuff that goes in irons etc from a supermarket. Some may say 'soft water is bad'... but I've had zero problems in years of using it. The main thing is to avoid air locks and don't leave the coolant in there for too long. Air locks are easy to avoid by squeezing the top and bottom hoses as you pour the coolant in. This is an easy job on a 190D. Don't forget the drain plug on the engine block. I recently replaced the coolant in my 2.6. I used Zerex ((Valvoline) G05 which is easier to find than G48 which I was unable to source here. G05 is approved by Mercedes Benz for use in vehicles of this vintage. I use it in all of my vehicles.
