I normally buy 6L of oil for a change with filter for 2.6, suspect the 1.8 is less (5L I think). I would stick with 10w/40, easy to check most brands against MB approved list. I use Castrol Magnatec which is MB approved, not too pricey. When I took the cam cover off recently the engine was spotless and oil consumption is about 1-1.5 litres between 7K mile changes. https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.1_en.html |

I'm with cockney only thing i'll add is Mannol Classic 10W-40 is on the 229.1 spec list and you can buy it in 20L drums for like £43 quid off ebay so works out at £2 per liter. Quite a decent saving compared to buying retail especially if you've got a few motors on the boil. I've not had the balls to move to synthetic oil due to the old if it isn't broke don't fix it but it is temping if it lives up to the hype surrounding it.
