Will paint stripper remove black paint from air filter box and engine cam cover or are these parts powder coated? I want to repaint them as the paint on mine are flakey but would need to strip and them to metal and respray semi gloss black. Cheers

Re. cam cover, I just chipped the paint off mine. Remember to do the inside, it will be just as bad and those little flakes will be getting into places they shouldn't.
The cam cover is magnesium, so will merrily corrode if you don't repaint the outside. The inside will be splashed with oil, so no worries there.
Enjoy! It's a shitty, but necessary job!

Try it in a small area first.......as they say ! Paint stripper generally does exactly what it says on the tin.
Wash of thoroghly after with hot water.

I paint stripped mine in the past worked ok but it was some eco friendly stripper from B&Q so was absolutely pants took loads of applications to take it off, still made you go a bit loopy huffing it though.
Get the most toxic wildlife destroying trade paint stripper you can find my advice it'll save you a lot of time.

Don't do what I did with my spare cam cover. 80% hydrochloric acid. It started melting it

Ok thanks guys the air box I'm fine with but removing the cam cover worries me a bit in case dust and stuff falls into the engine.

Also Can you reuse the gasket? I'll have to remove the oil from inside then strip or just chuck stripper on it. Worst case if I melt it I could always buy a new cover

Paint stripper won't damage metal (It's sold in tins) use Nitromors, its strong stuff. Don't spill it anywhere or splash it in your eyes.....
Best to remove the components to be stripped, then it won't get where it shouldn't!
Generally not best practice to reuse gaskets but carefully clean it and try.
Cover the top of the engine with silver Spam Spam Spam Spam foil or cling film whilst the rocker cover is off.

I get all mine vapour blasted, it's a finer version of sand blasting, treated, then powder coated, or anyone who does wheels, get the parts dipped then powder coated. It will save you lots of time, and will get rid of any paint fragments.

As above, Nitromors and a toothbrush will get the worst of it off with the ease if you're going the DIY route.

Otherwise it going for a powder coat finish, just be careful what media they use for stripping. The magnesium is very soft - and you don't want to be using sand/grit to strip the cover as particles can get trapped which end up inside your engine afterwards. I think a member on here years ago had a similar problem as he left the breather trap fitted which got filled with debris...

Don't forget to acid etch prime the bare magnesiusm before painting. UPOL do a suitable product that works well.

Greek this i found out last week when i replaced the valve cover gasket . The inside was worse than the outside . Inside the valve gear was as clean as a new pin .But the cover had been sprayed from new and had lots of paint inside it this was flaking off . Took me hours to clean it out .Justr hope its not gone down in to the oilways /.

Yes, why on earth would they paint it??
That said, I've never seen a post on here that told of engine death by paint flakes so we shouldn't worry too much.
As I've let slip before, I spray painted the outside of my cover with Rustoleum barbecue paint! It did an alright job and is holding up well, one year on.
It's my Viz top tip.

Also for others going to do this job , Do clean out the small holes in the valve cover ,They block up over time , mainly the small one .Its only a very small hole .If closes up over time with old oil it will close of the crank case breather system. And at the same time remove the oil baffle plate thats on the top of the valve cover .Clean the small u tube thats fixed to it .
