Hello, Can anyone advise appropriate intervals for: Engine oil & filter Fuel filters and air filter PAS filter and fluid Diff oil Auto gearbox oil and filter It's a 1993 five cylinder diesel showing 144k and a service history showing it's been serviced 35 times already! It'll do frequent short journeys with some longer runs too. Thanks in advance for any guidance. |

auto gearbox oil and diff oil, roughly every 2 years................the others around 6k miles but a lot of owners of older diesels like to do them at 4k miles, and if you are doing a lot of short journeys probably the best thing you can do, is once a month give a run down a motorway 1/2 hour/45 minutes in each direction as build up of condesation in the engine and exhaust will do more damage than you think |

+1. Don't leave oil more than 6 months and it'll keep running sweet. You only need standard semi-synth 10-40 so it won't cost much, and doing this job gives you the chance to take a look around underneath to spot anything that's rusting/wearing out. You didn't mention coolant - two years for that, and use the old blue MEG stuff. Nice and cheap, and deadly if you drink it! Edited by Greek Taxi, Wed Oct 18, 2017 11:23 am.

I have an old diesel Mk2 Scirocco and I do Oil at 3k and fuel / air at 9k. I'll just stick to that I think going on your recommendations. It'll get a motorway run a couple of times a week but inbetween, a few miles here and a few miles there. I was thinking of using 5w40 considering we are approaching winter, it'll lubricate better from cold which is important for short journeys. I have just changed the coolant for the proper Comma G48 stuff. Says it lasts three years on the bottle. Changed the diff oil a few weeks ago. What came out was spotlessly clean so it had clearly been recently done - just without specific mention in the service records. PAS fluid is also very clean but I'll change it anyway so I have a baseline to begin from. Thanks for your replies. Edited by MJK 24, Wed Oct 18, 2017 11:26 am.

I hear you re. the coolant. My reason for using basic MEG is it works well, but also with old cars I find myself needing to drop it out before two years anyway, due to a worn radiator, pump, hose or other repair that demands it. At least that was the case when I was using my old 2.0D for commuting. I'm a bit lazier with the other stuff - I still haven't done the PAS fluid in three years of having my petrol. |

I few online guides basically stated that virtually every Mercedes car and van used Comma G48 until 2013! I thought the older coolants were legislated against long before then? |

I've just looked up what G48 is - it's a pre-mixed ethylene glycol. I'm rabbiting on about the unmixed ethylene glycol that you add water to. The unmixed stuff lasts longer that two years if you avoid mixing it with tap water and use distilled or whatever. Anyway, long story short, it's all basically the same stuff. Car Mechanics mag did a big comparison test about eight years ago, and basically admitted that MEG is MEG, regardless of who produces it or what container it comes in. It wasn't the most interesting feature they've ever done! The modern cars run on OAT (don't they?). I know nowt about that since I don't own anything new enough to need it. There was a horrific case that went through the courts a few years ago. A mechanic in Leeds was sick of his mate nicking his Coke so put some MEG in it. He went blind and lost his hearing. It's nasty stuff. Edited by Greek Taxi, Wed Oct 18, 2017 7:01 pm.
