Hi
I am thinking of replacing my boot rubber. There is a little obvious leak on the right corner just above the taillight. I stopped it with some soft sealant but it has come back. The channel of the rubber seal has that disgusting degraded brittle waxy shite and to avoid spending hours trying to clean it out I might just replace it with a 'Vaico' one from ebay cheap enough. Is Vaico ok brand for rubber?
Do I use adhesive or soft sealant or do I just press it on?

Thankliest regurgitations
D.

Howya darsy,
I put a small bead of 3M 08509 rear windscreen soft seal around the edge of mine before pressing it into position. I am heartily sick of the leak (of which I can't find the source) letting water still come into the boot, but it's not from the boot seal.
I used a trucktec brand one replacement seal. It seems to sit a bit taller than the MB original one, so I moved the catch receiver slightly upwards to ease boot closing. I don't know of Vaico's offerings at all.

Felicitatious regardations,
ConorD

Hi Conor
Thanks for the reply. Did you put the sealer on the metal or on the rubber?

I am quite new to the rusty boot charms of the w201...
Re the leaking boot- have you replaced the boot lock o-ring the proper way? i.e. pressing the boot lock back towards you while tightening the two bolts?
Have you re sealed the c pillar side vents?
Checked the rear light seals?
Rear screen re seal is my next job.

Sound

Hiya darsy,
I put the bead on the metal - you only need a very thin bead, you don't want to bulge the seal up, or stop it from pressing tight against the metal..

On mine, the C-pillar seals were fine so I renewed just the sealant, I replaced 1 rear light seal and the other was fine so I just cleaned and reinstalled it. I replaced the rear windscreen seal (twice; 1st time I used windscreen bonder instead of sealant :( ).

My current leak source tracking attempts consist of lines of microfibre cloth and Spam Spam Spam Spam towel along trackways and cavities in the boot. It's pointing to the boot lock seal or misalignment around the boot lock (which could be the trucktec seal if it's not allowing the slam panel insert sit properly). I had discounted that boot lock seal, as I had an Indie replace that earlier this year. Until I test it with a hose, I can't be sure, but I have to assume that he's done it properly. He cut his teeth on W201s so he's happy working on them and knows how to do most jobs on it very well.

It's only a very small bit of water - I can feel what's getting absorbed by the cloths, and there's none hitting the metal anymore, but it seems to cause an inordinate amount of condensation on the boot lid and the interior (rear windscreen and rear passenger windows.) that I wipe dry every evening that it's there. Happily, I have no rust in the boot at all, under the parcel shelf etc. Even underneath the car, it's only surface rust on components, helped by the extra undercoat layer I got done on it about 4 years ago.

It's possible that it's coming into the passenger compartment from elsewhere, e.g. heating system or side window seals.

Best of luck with yours!

Remember when concerns about leaking boot seal arise, water rarely flows uphill.....

Very true Daliscar!

I'm making sure that I'm not being led astray by water vapour condensing on the cold glass, then flowing down so appearing to be a leak from where the condensing is happening.

Best Regards,
