Well, my comment about being bulletproof has bit me on the backside only 5 days into the new year:

1) drove car short journey, stopped at lights and as I pulled away, car stalled ans struggled to restart.

2) had noticed charcoal type smell last few weeks so had been planning new spark plugs anyway. After stall incident, I decided to change plugs immediately. On three of plugs i noticed oil. On all plugs the spark gap prong was orangey colour. Oil on sparks worries me most. Likely causes?

Are the plugs .the right ones for your engine ? If they are you could go up one heat wise . It will help to burn the oil off the plugs.. Check your brake fluid ,,that to can get in to the engine to make it look like you have ring or bore problems

Yes deffo right spark plugs. No oil on the spark end, mainly on the threads. I had same thought as you ie oil getting “spilt” from top rather than ring/bore problems (im a right one for spilling oil over spout when doin changes). Shes running fine this morning, so now that new plugs are in im going to see how she runs and check on spark plugs in a few weeks time.

The valve covers do leak out oil .It gets down inside spark plug holes .And after you remove the plug oil shows on the threads You will just have to try it and see how it goes

Yeah I highly suspect the valve covers. I see they are readily available. I note A few negative comments spotted on threads regarding genuine merc/dealership valve covers not being a great fit and leaking. Anyone done this job and what brand of cover have you used?
Cheers
