8v Turbo

Hello everyone,

I haven't formally introduced myself. My name is Stephane and I have recently purchased my first 190e 2.3 8v a few weeks ago. After many years of searching for the right car and doing endless amounts of research, I have finally found one. Here in Canada a lot of them are all rusted or the owners just want ridiculous amounts for their 8 and 16v's. I am new to the W201 world so please do not hesitate to let me know if this post should be adapted or deleted for the lack of research.

So here it goes:

I've done a lot of digging around and have seen a few people build reliable 2.3L 8v turbo but with little to no details. Now my goals for power isn't anything astronomical, trying to be around (200-300whp) for regular track and race use. I've heard on more then one occasion that these 2.3L 8v's can be very reliable on stock internals with proper tuning and builds.

The only reason why I am considering this route is because I am still debating on just swapping the engine out for a the well known N/A 2JZ-GE from Toyota, which has good linear power and torque for track use and has a reasonable aftermarket support compared to the 8v and 16v Cosworth. Obviously the cost at that point will be significantly higher due to the work involved in fitting the engine, transmission, drive train, etc., but a good engine and transmission combo here is roughly +/- $1400 CAD.

Although many of you may say, that I should simply swap the 2.3L 8v for the 2.3 16v. From my initial research, it just does not seem feasible for me. Last time I inquired for a 2.3 16v engine and transmission from someone on this forum, it came up to +/- $6000 CAD (due to the exchange rate) plus shipping/custom fees (approx $1000). Which is still an option, but I find that kind of expensive considering the little increase in power that I would be getting. Unless there is are less expensive 2.3 16v engines out there. I will be taking a peek at a near by scrap yards once the snow melts (fingers crossed).

Purpose of this thread is to inquire on your opinions and to see if anyone has information on a 2.3L 8v build that may be circulating the forum or the inter web. To be more specific I am looking for information on engine management systems used, differential, fuel management system, wiring, vacuum lines, etc...

Also doesn't seem like our cars are OBD-1 or ODB-0. As I am aware the 2.3 8v was some sort of a carb/fuel injection system.

So far from what I have gathered the 2.3L 8v is a good candidate for any form of boost:

Bore - 95.5
Stroke - 80.25
Displacement - 2299
Compression Ratio - 8.0:1 <--- Perfect for boost!

My concern with the 8v mainly its reliability. I've always been under the impression that they were extremely reliable but the moment you start tweaking them and playing with bolt on's they tend to fail rather quickly. (I haven't owned the car long enough to know if that is true)

At this point any information will be helpful. :)

Looking forward to sharing the progress of this project as the time goes by.

-Stephane

Hi 1morebenz,
There was some talk here years ago about Mosselman turbo kits - high price but good quality. These were available for 8v motors too.
I've included some links to threads have more about this type of kit.

Many thanks for the information!

I am aware of the existence of this kit.

Fortunately I am willing to build my own kit, since sourcing one would be next to impossible.
