Rocker cover refurb gone wrong

Has anyone has their rocker cover refurbed?

Due to them being powdercoated, my media blaster man recommended it being dipped. This is the first Mercedes cover he has done.
He phoned me to tell me he has had issues with it and that if I want to collect it it was a free job.
The surface has been attacked by the acid. Works out the cover contains magnesium, which constantly drinks.
A set of wheels he dipped before, without knowing they were magnesium fizzed in water for 2 days solid after being dipped.

I have tried hard sanding the surface back, filler primer, and a few coats of paint. Still very disappointed in the results.

Does anyone know if powdercoating will flatten the surface again or is it a case of buy another cover and start again?

Acid dipping is not good for magnesium, I would suggest the use of nitromors which uses Dichloromethane and methanol as its active ingredients. We used it on a couple of 16valve covers with great success. When you strip it again soak it in a mild caustic solution to neutralise any acid that may be remaining in the porus magnesium then wash it thouroughly with very hot water which will flush out any remaining chemicals prior to coating.

So many of these covers about pick .op a good one and chuck that one away Special work on the originals when they are produced .They get a sealant spray filler before the end paint procedure . I removed my valve cover to replace the gasket. The rubbish on the inside of the top of the cover made me shriek, because the paint was in bubbles and the finish was lifting off the cover .I caught it just in time . My cover on the outside was not to bad .But i spent 2 hours cleaning out the inside. I would tell every one to remove them , and to clean them out .Taking special note of the small holes in the valve cover that get blocked up .And these need keeping clean so the breathing system can do its job 100%.

The suggestions I was given today were firstly stop using this guy , he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
You don’t want to hear that though. The other was soft sand blasting or bead blasting. This followed by high build high temperature primer then powder coating. Alternatively high pressure water stripping and then alloy wheel lacquer over bare metal.
Alternatively of course.........get another one.

As for it being a free job. I'm not surprised he offered that, as in reality, he should be buying you another one.

Having said that, the crinkle look can look very good when painted with matte or satin paint.

Not much to add to the above, other than please be very careful with the media that you use to remove the paint, and before fitting be 100% certain all traces are removed - you need to remove the oil trap from the inside and thoroughly clean everything through otherwise tiny particles of sand or whatever abrasive media has been used will end up destroying your engine!

Nitromors and sandpaper/wire brush/dremel type tool is a painstakingly slow method by comparison but far safer too.

If you want another contact for prep and powder coating, the place that did these for me are experienced in magnesium alloy and fairly priced too:

When i did mine i didn't really getting too worried about it i just threw it in the blast cabinet with a fine glass media, blew it off with the air gun and painted it with a black engine enamel aerosol.

The cover I'm getting is already stripped.

What's best to do. I want it midnight blue to match the car bodywork. Paint with Mercedes paint or have it powder coated?

Just don’t have it acid dipped.
Painting will involve degreasing, sanding as required and etch primer.
Then a primer and top coat and possibly lacquer.
This can be a diy job, powder coating certainly not.
I reckon for a permanent no messing professional finish then it has to be powder coating.
Just don’t have it acid dipped.......

It's doing the job nicely and looks original. It's prob what they used at the factory :lol:

You dont want to use acid .Read the posts .It will make more of a problem for you .It wants bead blasting ie with sand, or nut shells . So as above nitromorse first , and then paint it with mat black exhaust manifold heat resistant paint .Normal paint will crack and lift off over time .

We used normal blauswartz on the 16 valve cover after filling and priming. It was finished off with a high temperature laquer and polishing of the logos. Occasional treatment of the polished parts with baby oil stopped any corrosion of the exposed metal. VHT paint is very good but it wont match any MB paint colour!
