woke up today and started the 190e 1.8 auto and it was lumpy as hell engine has slight rattle and idle was all over the place. we had a lot of rain yesterday and thought it might be the idle valve or distrubuter . ive had the car since 1999 and had no problems everyone could not believe how smooth the car drove. I drove the car for 15mins and it started to drive fine for a good half hour and parked it at my dads for twenty mins. when I started it again I got the same problem
it feels like it looses power at low speeds but never cuts out. took it to my mechanic but he was stressed out he did take a look at it maf sensor and long hex key on air filter but was more worried about the rattle he asked me to bring it in next week to have a proper look at it, but he thinks could be a broken tooth on chain and it had its time :(

Fuel filter and Air Flow Meter Potentiometer Sensor seam to be high on the list of culprit and maybe the coil

If the problem is intermittent then I doubt anything's broken on the timing side or it would be doing it all the time.

Have you changed the dizzy cap and rotor arm?
